김바늘Kim Baneul

실과 바늘로 질감을 쌓아 올리는 텍스처 아티스트. 사진과 실, 섬유를 화면 위에 겹치고 이어 붙여 기억과 감정의 흔적을 물질로 남긴다. 한 올의 실은 하나의 기억이 되기도 하고, 지나온 시간을 잇는 선이 되기도 한다.

시선은 개인의 기억에만 머물지 않는다. 사랑했던 사람과 사라져가는 순간에서 출발해 타인의 삶, 우리가 살아가는 사회와 시대까지 작업의 범위를 넓혀왔다. 첫 작업이자 첫 개인전 포스터였던 〈Eternal Sunshine〉을 시작으로, 프리다 칼로의 초상 〈내마음속 프리다〉, 참사로 남겨진 이들을 위한 위로의 숲 〈치유의 숲〉, 민화 속 까치 호랑이를 지금의 혼란으로 다시 읽은 〈삼체 : 격변하는 두번째 조선〉으로 이어진다.

최근 작업은 시각장애인도 손으로 감각할 수 있도록 질감의 현실성을 극대화하는 방향으로 나아가고 있다. 기존 미술 재료에 국한하지 않고 산업·건축용 재료까지 섞어 서로 다른 촉각과 표면을 만든다. 캔버스를 넘어 폐서핑보드나 신발 같은 실제 사물로 작업을 확장하며 평면과 입체의 경계를 오간다.

A texture artist who builds surfaces out of thread and needle. Layering photographs, yarn and textiles across the canvas, Kim Baneul records the traces of memory and emotion as physical matter — a single strand becomes a memory, or a line connecting the time that has passed.

Her gaze does not stay with personal memory alone. Starting from people she loved and moments that were disappearing, her work has widened to the lives of others and to the society and era we live in. It runs from 〈Eternal Sunshine〉, her first piece and the poster work of her first solo show, through 〈Frida in My Heart〉, a portrait of Frida Kahlo, and 〈Healing Forest〉, made for those left behind by disaster, to 〈Three Body: The Second Joseon in Upheaval〉, which re-reads the magpie-and-tiger of Korean folk painting as the confusion of the present.

Recent work pushes the physical reality of texture so that visually impaired visitors can read the surface by hand. Beyond conventional art materials she mixes in industrial and construction ones to build differing textures and touch. Her practice has also moved off the canvas onto real objects — a discarded surfboard, a pair of shoes — moving between the flat and the three-dimensional.
